Volleyball for both men and women became an official Olympic sport at the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964. At Tokyo 2020, teams are divided into two pools of six teams with each pool playing a round-robin. The top four teams of each pool advance to the quarterfinals and the final round is played under a knock-out system.
The U.S. Women’s National Team is one of the strongest volleyball squads in the world. In 2014, the U.S. broke through for its first major gold medal, winning the FIVB World Championship, and they’ve medaled in every FIVB World Cup since 2003. The five-time Olympic medalists have been on the podium in each of the last three Olympic Games, and more recently, they’ve won the first two iterations of FIVB’s Volleyball Nations League, which began in 2018.
The United States of America secured their spot for Tokyo 2020 by winning Pool C at the 2019 Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament. The US team are five-time Olympic medallists, which includes podium finishes at the last three editions of the Games, but they are yet to win gold. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the United States of America secured bronze with a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in the third-place match after losing to Serbia in five sets in the semifinals.
Volleyball has been part of the Summer Olympics program for both men and women consistently since 1964. Brazil, United States, and the former Soviet Union are the only teams to win multiple gold medals at the men's tournament since its introduction. The remaining six editions of the Men's Olympic Volleyball Tournament were won each by a different country including Japan, Poland, Netherlands, Russia, France, and the defunct Yugoslavia. Gold medals are less evenly distributed in women's volleyball
